Linuxbierwanderung-FAQ
Last modified: Mon Feb 22 15:19:12 PST 1999
Who are the new organizers of Linuxbierwanderung?
Leonid Kirillov <leonid@cy.spb.ru> and
Hans-Joachim
Picht <h_picht@gmx.de> have
taken over the reigns
from us and are making all plans
and arrangements for Linuxbierwanderung now. A new mailing list will soon be
started, so watch for new
announcements from these people. In the meantime, all requests for
information should be directed to the two new organizers.
Is this event for real?
Yes, the Linuxbierwanderung is really real. There's been many
inquiries, the mailing list is very active, it's receiving media
attention, and we now have a couple of corporate sponsors.

When?
August 7-14, 1999. We will post more schedule details as soon as we have
them.
Anybody else from my town going?
Check our local groups page. If you don't
see some of your Linux neighbors and want to get them organized,
please mail us and we'll add you to the page as a local contact.
A solar eclipse?
That's right -- August 11, 1999. Please see this article from
Sky and Telescope for more information:

(Thanks to Tim Pickering for posting
the link to the mailing list.)
How much will this cost?
Our intention is to keep costs as low as possible, thus the
corporate sponsorship. The more people that sign-up the less expensive it
gets. Hikers will be responsible for getting to and
from the trailhead and bringing their own laptop computers.
Do I have to bring a laptop?
We will have a few machines available and we'll give you an account.
And if you bring a laptop we encourage you to give accounts to your
fellow hikers.
We'll carry lots of power strips in the vans and set up a charging
station. If you can set up a charger independent of your laptop we
encourage you to bring a spare battery and do so. We might see if we
can get the wounded and malingerers to set up the charger farm while
you hike, so that you'll have a fresh battery waiting when you arrive
at camp. Maybe three batteries would be best -- one in use, a spare
in your pack, and one in the charger.
And we can guess that somebody will show up with one of these.
Can I get a net connection?
We're working on getting a sponsor for wireless connections, and we'll
set up campground networks so we can all get on the net.
Please see the "Linux on Laptops" page at http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/.

What should I bring?
We'll post a suggested list, including everything from boots to PCMCIA
cards. You can bring a backpack to wear on the trail and a duffle bag
for stuff you want to have brought along in the van. A lot of Linux
users buy the same stuff, so put your name on things.
Can I rent a tent and backpack if I don't have them?
We want to have the first night's stay near a business that provides
this service. There will be more details on camping gear when we have
a "what to bring" list and an itinerary.
How many will be going?
The more people who go will reduce the sign-up fee per hiker.
Can I use the "hiking Tux" picture from the home page?
Yes, you can freely copy and redistribute this image. Please link to
our site if you use it on the web.

How much will it cost to be a corporate sponsor?
Our estimates of the total number of instructors & hikers are enabling
us to design a formal budget. This budget will specify the exact
overhead of the trip. We should have more details about sponsorship
costs shortly when this budget is confirmed.
